Conversation Practice: Orientation

Small talk is light, casual conversation that helps break the ice and make new connections. As college freshmen, small talk is a great way to meet people, get comfortable in new social situations, and ease into campus life.

Here are some simple tips:

1. Start with a greeting: "Hey, how’s it going?"
2. Ask easy questions: "What’s your major?" or "Are you living on campus?"
3. Be interested: Listen and respond with follow-up questions.

Small Talk Example 1: After Class

Alex: Hey, I’m Alex. That class was pretty interesting, right?

Mia: Yeah! I’m Mia. I didn’t expect the professor to be so funny.

Alex: Same! Do you think the course will be hard?

Mia: I hope not. The syllabus seemed intense though.

Alex: True. What’s your major, by the way?

Mia: I’m studying Psychology. What about you?

Alex: I’m in Engineering. I guess we’ll be in different buildings.

Mia: Yeah, but it’s nice to know someone in this class!

Small Talk Example 2: At the Cafeteria

Chris: Hi, I’m Chris. First time eating here?

Emily: Hey, I’m Emily. Yeah, I’m still figuring out where everything is.

Chris: The pizza is pretty good. Have you tried it?

Emily: Not yet. I’ve been sticking with salads for now.

Chris: Nice! What’s your major, by the way?

Emily: Business. What about you?

Chris: Computer Science. We’ll probably be in the same building a lot!

Emily: Yeah, it looks like we’ll bump into each other pretty often!

Small Talk Example 3: In the Dorms

Ryan: Hey, I’m Ryan. Are you new here too?

Lily: Yeah, I’m Lily. Just moved in yesterday. How about you?

Ryan: Same! Still unpacking, though. How’s dorm life treating you so far?

Lily: Not too bad! My roommate’s nice, so that helps. What about yours?

Ryan: Yeah, mine’s cool. What are you studying?

Lily: Marketing. You?

Ryan: History. Maybe we’ll run into each other in the common room!

Lily: For sure! It’d be nice to hang out more.
